Maths
Ambition
Maths is an essential and exciting part of our curriculum. Through our daily Maths teaching, we endeavor to ensure that all children are enabled to become confident mathematicians with the necessary skills to tackle Maths in daily life. To achieve this, we encourage cross curricular opportunities wherever possible, so that key concepts are reinforced and consolidated in real life contexts. Maths lessons are fun, interactive and past paced, ensuring that children enjoy their lessons and build resilience towards challenges.
Implementation
At Pineham Barns Primary School, we teach through progressive objectives, which challenge and support all learners in all areas of the Maths curriculum including Number, Place Value; Addition and Subtraction; Multiplication and Division; Fractions; Shape; Position, Direction and Movement; Measure and Statistics. Every lesson, there is a challenge that the children can access to ensure children reach their full potential and never putting a ceiling on their learning.
Our Arithmetic sessions are fast paced, interactive and use ongoing assessment to support and challenge learners as necessary. Across the school, we ensure that children use a range of practical resources to support their understanding of Maths and children demonstrate their learning in concrete, pictorial and abstract representations. We believe that having a secure understanding of numbers is essential for children’s confidence and we develop this from Early Years. This enables our children to build upon their knowledge as they move through the school and have a greater depth of understanding of mathematics, which will support them through their future education. We provide opportunities for children to demonstrate their reasoning skills and understanding and apply their skills to solve complex problems.
As a school, we recognise the importance of the parental role in securing each child’s success. Therefore, we offer parent workshops which explain the methods we use in school so that they can be fully involved in their child’s learning.
Impact
Our focus on the foundations maths and the design of our curriculum has proven to be a strength of our school. Our children are confident, resilient and have developed a love of maths. Our outcomes demonstrate this as in 2022, 93% of children left at the expected standard in Key Stage Two SATS with 27% leaving at Greater Depth.
