Ambition

Our mission is to ignite a lifelong passion for Literacy by immersing children in a vast and ambitious variety of genres, topics, and texts. We have created a curriculum that incorporates everything from classic texts to contemporary stories, designed to challenge perceptions and broaden horizons. Our classrooms are spaces where literature comes alive. We provide the tools and the inspiration for pupils to become articulate explorers of text, capable of discussing complex themes with detail and insight. By providing these rich, high-quality reading and writing experiences, we empower every child to unlock their unique potential and cultivate a lasting love of literature.

We believe that confidence is the key to mastery. Through an environment where reading is everywhere, we ensure pupils develop a positive, resilient mindset toward reading and writing. This solid foundation does more than just build literacy skills: it serves as the essential gateway for students to confidently access and excel across the entire curriculum.

Implementation

At the heart of our school is a progressive and captivating curriculum designed to transform pupils into confident communicators and avid readers. We believe that writing is a vehicle for expression, and we provide a wide range of writing opportunities across the whole school, ensuring literacy is woven into the fabric of every subject.

The Spark

To ensure every child is engaged from the outset, every learning journey begins with a ‘WOW’ lesson. These immersive experiences – ranging anywhere from mysterious artifacts appearing in classrooms to dramatic role-play – are designed to hook children’s interests and ignite their imaginations, providing a rich, sensory starting point for their writing.

EYFS and Key Stage One

Our journey begins in the Early Years, where we ignite a love for language in our inspiring indoor and outdoor learning environments. We utilise the Essential Letters and Sounds (ELS) phonics framework to provide a rigorous, consistent, and high-impact start to independent reading. We recognise that parents are the first educators; we work in close partnership with families to ensure they are central to their child’s reading journey, fostering a love of books that continues at home.

These strong foundations are matured in Key Stage One. Alongside, developing and securing their phonetic knowledge, our children explore a diverse range of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry to develop their vocabulary and enjoyment. We move beyond decoding to focus on comprehension and oracy, encouraging children to explore themes, debate character motives, and find their own voices.

We recognise that securing foundational knowledge in these early years is non-negotiable. If these building blocks are not fully secured by the end of Key Stage 1, we act immediately. We provide targeted interventions and support, including specialised handwriting and spelling clubs, to ensure no child is left behind and every pupil possesses the physical and cognitive tools to write with ease.

Key Stage Two

In lower KS2, using the Essential Spelling Scheme, our children transition from phonetic spelling to morphology, exploring how prefixes and suffixes change meaning, and understanding key spelling rules. Their handwriting moves from formation to fluent joining, reducing cognitive load so that they can focus on expanding their descriptive and expressive voices in writing.

In upper KS2 our focus matures into etymology (word origins) and high-level comprehension, where pupils critique an author’s style and impact. Oracy becomes a tool for debate, allowing pupils to articulate deeply personal responses to complex, ambitious texts. By the end of Year 6, our pupils are confident, academic learners. They possess the technical mastery to write engaging, meaningful, and sophisticated texts, equipped with the literacy skills necessary to access and excel across the entire wider curriculum.

We deliver a balanced and ambitious curriculum through six integrated segments:

  • Reading Experiences: Immersing pupils in a range of inspiring, high-quality genres and igniting their imaginations through acting, discovery and investigation.
  • Phonics: Providing the essential code-breaking skills for early fluency.
  • Comprehension and analysis: Developing the ability to critique, question, and analyse texts deeply.
  • Writing: Cultivating a creative and purposeful voice across various genres.
  • Spelling: Using the ELS scheme, we teach spelling not as a list of words to be memorised, but as rules to be mastered. This journey moves from the smallest units of phonetical sounds to the history of language itself.
  • Handwriting: Building the technical accuracy and pride in presentation needed for fluid expression.
  • Punctuation and Grammar: Empowering pupils with the structural tools to craft impact and meaning.

Impact

By weaving a progressive and ambitious curriculum from Early Years to Year 6, we empower every child to journey into worlds far beyond their imagination. By mastering the foundational skills of ELS Phonics, fluent handwriting, and systematic spelling, pupils gain the cognitive freedom to move past the mechanics of literacy and into deep comprehension and creativity. Our exceptional phonics outcomes are an indicator of these strong foundations, with an average of 95% of children passing their phonics screening check over the last three years, compared to 80% nationally. These fantastic pass rates are also evident in our three year average in Year Six, where 94% of our children achieved the Year Six standard in Reading, compared with 74% nationally. This solid foundation ensures that every learner – regardless of their starting point – possesses the academic confidence to articulate personal responses and the essential skills to unlock and excel across the entire curriculum.
