History

Ambition
Pupils receive a bespoke curriculum which enables them to become inquisitive and confident individuals, with a coherent understanding of key historical moments in British and World history. It is through the progressive development of skills, vocabulary, Celebration Days, and unique trips and visits that our children develop a love for History and the confidence to understand how key events have shaped the world in which we live today.
Implementation
This is delivered in the following way across each year group:
Year One
Victorians – children explore the lives of those living in that period and how this differs from our today. The children will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the life of Victorians and how it is different to ours.
Year Two
Monarchy Madness – pupils compare the lives of different monarchs and also look at subjects such as the Great Fire of London and the Plague.
Year Three
Ancient Civilisations- Greeks and Egyptians – children investigate ancient civilisations; how they were ruled, how they lived, what they achieved and how this impacted future civilisations.
Year Four
Anglo- Saxons, Normans, Romans and Vikings – we focus on how our country was shaped by these key periods in time.
Year Five
Suffragettes and World at War – pupils reflect on both world wars, how they started and the impact on life.
Year Six
Vietnam and the 60s and Rock of Ages- children examine the causes of the way, its impact, explore opposing viewpoints and cause and consequence.
Through focusing on these areas and developing historical enquiry skills we provide the children an opportunity to:
– Understand different models of leadership and government
– Be discerning about historical sources and recognise the impact of partiality within this.
– Recognise similarities and differences across historical periods.
– Ask questions and make judgements based on evidence.
– Recognise that modern life has been built on the success and failures of a vast period on human history.
Children have the opportunity to develop chronological understanding, historical comprehension, historical enquiry, historical interpretation and organisation of events and communication.
Our children develop a love of History through innovative and engaging learning experiences. As they progress through the curriculum, they are exposed to different viewpoints, enabling them to debate key moments in history and understand the impact of these on modern society. As a result, we are preparing them with the ability to think creatively, whilst understanding the importance of perspective and rationality.
