Languages

Ambition
Speaking and listening is a fundamental learning skill, developed as our children engage with the world around them by sharing their thoughts and listening to others. To broaden horizons and introduce life beyond home town, county and country, we teach Spanish at Pineham Barns Primary. We aim for children to be aware of other cultures, and to appreciate how widening their knowledge of modern foreign languages can be exciting, and benefit their future endeavors.
It is our ambition that from an early age, we build passion for embracing new languages that will carry our children through their primary journey and beyond. We integrate teaching our children about the wonders of different countries they are exploring through their learning, so they continually demonstrate respect and tolerance of different cultures.
Implementation
Teachers are supported by experts through a language programme designed for the Key Stage One and Two curriculum. Lessons are fun, interactive and accessible to all, designed to boost self-confidence, self-esteem and enhance natural creativity and curiosity. Through the progressive curriculum we build understanding year on year, to ensure knowledge is varied and skills are progressive.
Children have the opportunity to:
- Listen, speak and demonstrate understanding by joining in and responding
- Explore language through songs and rhymes
- Engage in conversations and role plays
- Understand basic language structures
- Appreciate stories, songs, poems and rhymes in a different language
Read, write and complete grammar exercises

Impact
The progressive nature of our curriculum ensures that children have the foundations of understanding another language. Ultimately, our ambition is that the impact of the curriculum will enable our children to be linguistically confident, passionate about other languages and cultures, and well prepared to approach the range of languages taught in Year 7 and beyond.
