Well-Being

Our Ambition

At Pineham Barns Primary School, our children’s wellbeing is the highest importance to us and we promote positive wellbeing in everything we do. Our ambition is to create confident, resilient and empathetic learners who know how to look after their physical and mental wellbeing. We have designed a Wellbeing curriculum which is taught every week on ‘Wellbeing Wednesday’s,’ this includes a wellbeing assembly and then a 45 minute session based on physical and mental wellbeing. We teach wellbeing through the 5 way of wellbeing which are:

Connect – This element is all about connecting with ourselves and others. Feeling close to, and valued by, other people is a fundamental human need and one that contributes to functioning well in the world. Teach children to connect with each other; ask someone how they are. Connect with your feelings. Take a genuine interest in other peoples wellbeing.

Be Active – Learning how to look after our physical wellbeing. Physical health is not only good for the body, but also the mind as it has a direct link to mental health. Regular physical activity is associated with higher levels of happiness. Lower paced activities, like walking, have a positive impact on social skills whilst still exercising. During ‘Be Active’ sessions, children will be encourage to participate in physical activity: walking, jogging, play a new sport, yoga.

Take Notice – This element provides our children with opportunities to take note of what is happening around them and how our actions and decisions have an impact on others. The children will take notice of how they feel and explore the different emotions. Learning the signs of emotions and strategies of how to manage our feelings and how to get ourselves back to a calm state. Children will also learn to take notice of the environment and others around them.

Keep Learning – In these sessions, children will learn something new outside of our school curriculum. They will learn the importance of setting themselves a goal and to have high aspirations of what they can achieve now and in their future. Setting goals has been associated with higher levels of wellbeing. Children are provided with dedicated time to research / learn a new skill and challenge themselves.

Give: Children will link with a charitable project and participate in community life. They will learn about the importance of helping others and how to have a positive impact on our community. The children learn about not just raising money, but giving people in need their time and thoughts and how this can positively affect our wellbeing.

Our curriculum encourages independence, resilience and empathy towards others, as well as how to contribute positively towards society. We have invested in a running track to encourage our pupil’s to ‘Be Active’ and live a healthy lifestyle. In addition to our Wellbeing Curriculum, we provide wellbeing interventions including a lunchtime club and individual programmes based on the needs of our pupils.
