Geography

Ambition

It is our ambition, that our Geography curriculum inspires a positive and proactive approach towards securing the future of our planet, in a world where human impact is increasingly influencing its future. We also want to enthuse our children about the subject, so that they also have a desire to continue to learn about our planet’s endless geographical wonders.

Our Geography curriculum begins with the children’s experiences, using the local environment to support their learning through regular Welly Walks. This enables them to bring their learning to life through the exploration of their natural environment.

As children move further into Key Stage Two, our curriculum builds progressively, so that children have a secure understanding of the wonders of our planet. Our curriculum, encourages a fascination and inquisitive nature which very much promotes a caring attitude towards our environment.

Implementation

Alongside colleagues in our MAT, we have worked collaboratively to create topics that meet the ambitions of the National Curriculum. Our Geography curriculum builds on the children’s previous learning, developing their knowledge and skills as they develop their understanding through the different topics. Through our carefully mapped curriculum, our children develop their skills of geographical enquiry and enhance their understanding of human and physical geography.

The topics taught are:

Year One – Tour De France!

This builds on the child’s understanding of the world around them and links to exploring life in wider Europe.

Year Two- An Australian Adventure and Route 66

Children in Year Two are encouraged to explore a range of continents and make comparisons between the geographical features.

Year Three – Life on the Edge – Extremes

Children are introduced to the concept of biomes and climate zones, as they understand and question the different types of deserts around the world.

Year Four – Mother Earth

Children further explore different continents, reflecting on the geographical features and climate zones, but consider biodiversity, human impact, and economy within this.

Year Five and Six –The Great Barrier Reef and Africa

During these topics, children reflect on human impact on the biodiversity and longevity of biomes around the world, such as the Sahara Desert and the Great Barrier Reef, whilst considering and comparing trade and wealth distribution.

Year 6- The Big Red Bus Tour (Field study)

During this topic, children will conduct a geographical study of the local area, allowing them to use fieldwork to observe, measure, record and present the human and physical features in the local area through a range of methods, including sketch maps, graphs, and digital technologies.

Impact

Through our curriculum, our pupils have a deeper understanding of physical and human processes. This is enhanced by our Eco Curriculum and Welly Walk curriculum, ensuring that our children have a greater understanding of the importance of protecting our planet for their generation. Through engaging lessons, we are providing our children with the knowledge and skills that will inspire them to make a difference and lead future change.
